Healthcare

Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (CNA/GNA) @ Bon Secours

The three-month CNA/GNA training program teaches participants nursing assistant skills, such as how to measure and record blood pressure, count and record respirations, assist patients with limited mobility, and provide hygienic care. After finishing the classroom portion of training, participants complete a 40-hour clinical to practice their skills. Bon Secours assists all participants with the CNA license application process and signing up for the GNA exam.
 
A CNA/GNA works with residents living in a long-term care home or assisted living facility or with a private organization providing in-home care. The majority of those cared for will be elderly. CNA/GNAs can expect to earn anywhere in the range of $11 - $15 per hour upon graduation. This program is a good fit for individuals who like working with people, especially people who are elderly or have limited mobility or dementia, are comfortable performing hands-on care, and are mature and dependable.​

Healthcare

Medical Front Office with the option of adding Phlebotomy @ Community College of Baltimore County

The three-month Medical Front Office  program teaches participants medical administrative skills. Participants will learn customer service skills, such as how to register patients, schedule appointments, and use Electronic Health Records Systems. In addition, participants will learn medical terminology and CPR. Participants can receive a national recognized certification through the National Health Career Association: Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).

Taking the Phlebotomy course is optional, and can be done after the Medical Front Office course. The Phlebotomy course teaches direct care experience, including how to draw blood and prepare medical instruments. Participants can receive a national recognized certification through the National Health Career Association: Certified Phlebotomist (CPt).

Potential job titles include Medical Office Specialist, Patient Coordinator, Phlebotomist, and Lab Assistant. The average starting wage is between $12 and $15 per hour. This program is a good fit for people who have strong organizational skills and attention to detail and love working with patients. People who are comfortable working with needles and blood might be interested in the Phlebotomy option.

​CNA/GNA/ and Patient Care Technician @ Community College of Baltimore County 

This eight-month program teaches two types of health care skills. The first credential is CNA/GNA which provides basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff. Participants will learn how to perform duties such as feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, and moving, patients. Other skills include changing linens and transferring or transporting patients. 

The Patient Care Technician (PCT), performs nursing tasks that require a higher level of technical ability and skill. These task include venipuncture, specimen collection, IV therapy, basic EKG, and advanced CNA skills. Job titles include: Nursing Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Geriatric Nursing Assistant. The average starting wage is 14.25 per hour. This program is a good fit for individuals who like working with people, especially people who are elderly or have limited mobility or dementia, are comfortable performing hands-on care, and are mature and dependable.

Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant @ Baltimore City Community College

The five-month CNA/GNA training program teaches participants basic nursing skills in measuring and recording blood pressure, counting and recording breathing rates, helping patients who cannot move much on their own, demonstrating hand hygiene, customer service, working well with others, handling conflict, and many other skills. BCCC assist participants with the application process and materials required and pass the exams. They also provide additional study and small groups to help during the test prep phase to help earn a CNA license and a GNA license.

Healthcare

Pharmacy Technician @ Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC)


 The five-month Pharmacy Technician program covers medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, math for pharmacy, customer service, CPR, and HIPPA privacy laws. Participants will also learn about prescription processing, pharmacology, common medications, quality assurance and medication safety, billing and insurance, information systems, and the basics of compounding. Following classroom training, participants will complete a 160-hour externship experience at a pharmacy.

Graduates will receive a CCBC Continuing Education Workforce Training Certificate, and will have the opportunity to take the national certification exam through the Pharmacy Technician Certifying Board to become a certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).

Job duties of Pharmacy Technicians include assisting pharmacists in retail pharmacy settings and hospitals, providing customer service, processing insurance claims, maintaining inventories, and filling prescriptions. The average starting wage is $14.86 per hour. This program is a good fit for people who enjoy working with customers, like science, and can safely handle instruments and pharmaceutical ingredients.

Pharmacy Technician @ Baltimore City Community College

The six-month Pharmacy Technician program will train participants on how to read and interpret prescriptions, defining drugs by generic and brand names, dosage calculations, flow rates, drug conversions, the science of working with medications, and the basics of mixing a medicine specifically for one person.
Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the passing of Maryland Board of Pharmacy exam.

Job duties of Pharmacy Technicians include assisting pharmacists in retail pharmacy settings and hospitals, providing customer service, processing insurance claims, maintaining inventories, and filling prescriptions. The average starting wage is $14.00 per hour. This program is a good fit for people who enjoy working with customers, like science, and can safely handle instruments and pharmaceutical ingredients.

Hospitality 
Hospitality @ Maryland New Directions 

​This two-week training offers participants general job readiness and preparation for working in the customer service and hospitality fields. Participants will learn customer service and assertive communication to prepare them to work as guest service professionals. There are many jobs in this field, with job titles including Front Office, Room Service Server, Concierge, Bell Person, Greeter, Housekeeping Room Attendant, Hostess, Bus person, and Steward. 

Participants gain the Certified Guest Service Professional (CGSP) certification. In addition, if participants are interested in working in guest services at an airport, they can receive the Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).The average wage is $11.76 per hour. This program is a good fit for people who like working with customers, like working in an office setting, and are pleasant and friendly with different types of people.

Construction

Construction with YouthBuild @ Civic Works


This construction program takes about four to five months to complete and prepares participants for a variety of different tasks in the construction field, including carpentry, painting, site inspection, and controlled demolition. During the training, participants are paid a bi-weekly stipend of $510, and after completing the training, can receive an educational award of about $1500. 

Participants will receive a safety certification (OSHA 10), Sherwin Williams professional painting certification, and a Home Builders Institute certification. The average wage for entry level jobs is between $12 and $14.50 per hour. 

​This program is a good fit for people who do not mind working inside or outside, even when it is very hot or very cold, who enjoy working with their hands, and who are physically able to lift up to 50lbs.

Construction Project Jumpstart @ JOTF

This construction program through Project Jumpstart takes 87-hours to complete and prepares participants for a variety of different tasks in the construction field, including plumbing, electrical, and related careers. During the training, participants are paid $25 for each class they attend.

Participants will receive a safety certification (OSHA 10), CPR and First Aid. The average wage for entry level jobs is between $13 per hour. 

​This program is a good fit for people who do not mind working inside or outside, who is willing to work 10 or more hours each day when needed, even when it is very hot or very cold, who is willing to learn a new skill quickly, and who would like to work as early as 5am.

Distribution & Logistics

Maritime, Transportation, Distribution & Logistics Training (MTDL) @ Maryland New Directions

Designed in cooperation with the Port of Baltimore and other employers, this three-week program helps prepare participants for careers at the Port of Baltimore or at local warehouses. Participants can receive a number of different industry certifications, including a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC), OSHA-10, Forklift certification, Warehouse Inventory Control Specialist certification, or Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) certification. 

Job duties include organizing the distribution and storage of goods at the Port of Baltimore or at local warehouses
. You may also be involved in transportation, stock control, warehousing and monitoring the flow of goods. You can find a lot of different jobs with these certifications, including as a Forklift Operator, Warehouse Associate, Order Puller, Packer, Production Worker, Inventory Specialist, Assembly Worker, or Logistics Administrator. The average starting wage is $12.71 per hour. 

This program is a good fit for people who like to learn new skills, want to operate machinery, enjoy working with their hands, and are physically able to lift at least 50 lbs and are able to stand for long periods of time.

Land Surveyors

Future Surveyors @ Urban Alliance




This three-month program is not a traditional job training program, but a paid internship program where participants get real-life experience as a land surveyor. The eight-week paid internship also includes weekly workshops on time management, interviewing skills, and financial planning.

Job duties of surveyors include updating property boundary lines, preparing sites for construction projects, and measuring to determine property boundaries. Potential job titles include Rodman and Surveying Technician.  Entry-level Rodmans make an average wage of $10 - $12 per hour, and entry-level Surveying Technicians make an average wage of $15 - $20 per hour. 

This program is a good fit for people who like to be up early, enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather, and want to work with surveying instruments such as drones and measuring devices.
